Powerful Front-of-Package Nutrition Symbols at your fingertips

We are thrilled to announce the launching of NutriSymbol, the new self-serve Front-of-Package Nutrition Symbols Generator for Canadian Food Packaging and Labelling.

The webpage is now active and can be used by anyone to generate compliant Nutrient Symbols that will be mandatory on Pre-packaged foods that meet the requirements of Canada’s Front-of-Package Nutrition Labelling requirements.

Foods that are high in Saturated fats, Sugar and or Sodium must carry this warning. We take the guess-work out of the size and kind and content of the Symbol.

You need to plus in a few variables and the tool takes care of the rest.

Our website also addresses many of the questions about which foods must carry this warning, which foods are always exempt, which are conditionally exempt, and how you might lose your exemptions.

It also tells you where to place the symbol, while the tool tells you the dimensions and formatting of the symbol.

Attractive prices for do-it-yourself graphic generation, using Health Canada’s Nutrition Symbols as the basis for your work.

We help take the guess-work out of when, how and where this symbol should be used.

We’ve made this tool absolutely free and self-serve. If you prefer, we’re happy to provide you the symbol as part of our Food Label Compliance work.

Which foods must carry the Symbol?

Prepackaged products that have amounts of saturated fats, sugars and/or sodium that exceed the threshold amounts of these nutrients must carry the Symbol.

Which foods are exempt?

Certain foods are prohibited from carrying the symbol, and others are exempt from carrying it. Typically, products that are single ingredients like fresh fruit, whole meat cuts, and whole vegetables are exempt. So are things like oils, and pure sugar and salt. Foods that provide essential nutrients like calcium are also exempt, like various dairy products.

Foods that are sold at farmers markets, or prepared in-store are also exempt, as are foods that are intended to be sold to institutions, commercial or industrial enterprises.

Can my product lose its exemption?

The prepackaged products lose their conditional exemption when they contain an ingredient that has saturated fat or sugars other than ingredients set out in subsection B.01.350(9). An example would be canned asparagus with salt added. Whole vegetables are exempt, but the addition of salt causes the loss of exemption for the Nutrition Symbol.

  • Human milk fortifiers
  • Human milk substitutes (infant formula)
  • Foods represented as containing a human milk substitute
