What Are Front of Package Nutrition Symbols?
Front of Package (FOP) nutrition symbols are mandatory warning labels required by Health Canada on foods that contain high levels of:
- Saturated Fat (≥15% DV per reference amount)
- Sugars (≥15% DV per reference amount)
- Sodium (≥15% DV per reference amount)
These black-and-white magnifying glass symbols appear on the principal display panel (front of package) to help Canadian consumers make healthier food choices at a glance.
Why This Matters to Your Business:
- ✓ Mandatory compliance by January 1, 2026
- ✓ Applies to most packaged foods sold in Canada
- ✓ Non-compliance = CFIA violations, fines, and recalls
- ✓ Symbol placement affects package design and artwork
- ✓ Requires accurate nutrition analysis and calculations
Who Needs Front of Package Nutrition Symbols?
You MUST display FOP symbols if your product:
✓ Contains ≥15% Daily Value of saturated fat, sugars, or sodium per reference amount
✓ Is a prepackaged food sold in Canada
✓ Is NOT in an exempt category
Exempt Products (No FOP Symbol Required):
- Raw whole cuts of meat, poultry, and fish
- Raw or pasteurized milk
- Raw eggs in shell
- Fruits and vegetables with no added ingredients
- Foods sold in small packages (≤100 cm² display area)
- Ground meat and poultry (certain exemptions)
- Whole eggs (certain preparations)
- Certain dairy products
- Butter and vegetable oils
Not sure if your product needs a symbol? Use our free assessment tool or contact our experts.
The rules set out for determining the contents of the symbol, the dimension, the shape and alignment are based on several factors, which include information from a products nutrition facts panel, the dimensions of the container, whether the product is exempt, and the reference amount of the food.

Understanding FOP Symbol Requirements
The Three Key Nutrients:
1. Saturated Fat Symbol
Triggered when: ≥15% Daily Value (≥3g per reference amount)
Common in: Baked goods, cheese, processed meats, snacks, ice cream
2. Sugars Symbol
Triggered when: ≥15% Daily Value (≥7.5g per reference amount)
Common in: Sweetened beverages, cereals, yogurt, desserts, candy
3. Sodium Symbol
Triggered when: ≥15% Daily Value (≥345mg per reference amount)
Common in: Soups, sauces, deli meats, frozen meals, snacks
Important: If your product is high in 2 or 3 nutrients, the symbol displays ALL applicable warnings (e.g., “High in saturated fat and sugars”).
Symbol Placement Rules:
The FOP symbol must appear on the principal display panel (front of package) and must be:
- Located in the upper right corner (with specified exceptions)
- Minimum size based on principal display area:
- ≤100 cm²: Exempt
- 100-225 cm²: Symbol Height 10mm
- 226-380 cm²: Symbol Height 12mm
- 381-650 cm²: Symbol Height 15mm
- 650 cm²: Symbol Height 20mm
- Bilingual (English and French)
- Black on white or white on black background
- Contrasting with package design
- Unobstructed by other label elements

How to Calculate If You Need a FOP Symbol
The Reference Amount Method:
Health Canada requires FOP symbol determination based on Reference Amounts, NOT serving sizes listed on your Nutrition Facts Table.
Why? To prevent companies from using artificially small serving sizes to avoid “High in” warnings.
Step-by-Step Calculation:
Step 1: Find your product’s Reference Amount
View Health Canada’s Reference Amount Table →
Step 2: Calculate nutrients per Reference Amount
(Your Nutrition Facts serving may differ from the Reference Amount)
Step 3: Calculate % Daily Value (%DV)
- Saturated Fat: (grams × 100) ÷ 20g = %DV
- Sugars: (grams × 100) ÷ 50g = %DV
- Sodium: (mg × 100) ÷ 2300mg = %DV
Step 4: Check Thresholds
- If ANY nutrient ≥15% DV → FOP symbol required
- If multiple nutrients ≥15% DV → Multi-nutrient symbol required
Too complex? Our free tool does all calculations automatically. Just enter your Nutrition Facts data.

Common FOP Symbol Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake #1: Using Serving Size Instead of Reference Amount
The Error: Calculating %DV based on your declared serving size
The Fix: Always use Health Canada’s Reference Amount for your product category
Mistake #2: Wrong Symbol Dimensions
The Error: Scaling symbol incorrectly for package size
The Fix: Use our tool’s automated size calculator or consult CFIA guidelines
Mistake #3: Incorrect Placement
The Error: Placing symbol anywhere convenient on package
The Fix: Upper right corner of principal display panel (with specific exceptions)
Mistake #4: Poor Contrast
The Error: Symbol blends into colorful package design
The Fix: Black on white or white on black, with clear border
Mistake #5: Missing One Nutrient
The Error: Showing “High in sugars” when product is ALSO high in sodium
The Fix: Display ALL nutrients that exceed 15% DV threshold
Mistake #6: Using Outdated Nutrition Data
The Error: FOP symbol based on old formulation
The Fix: Verify current Nutrition Facts Table before generating symbol
Mistake #7: Assuming Exemption Without Verification
The Error: “Our product is similar to X, so it’s probably exempt”
The Fix: Formally assess each product against CFIA exemption criteria

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the FOP symbol mandatory for my product?
A: If your product contains ≥15% Daily Value of saturated fat, sugars, or sodium per reference amount AND is not in an exempt category, yes it’s mandatory as of January 1, 2026.
Q: Can I use your free tool for commercial products?
A: Yes! NutriSymbol is completely free for personal and commercial use with no restrictions.
Q: What if my product has more than one “High in” nutrient?
A: The symbol displays all applicable warnings. For example, if high in both sodium and saturated fat, the symbol will show both.
Q: Do I need separate symbols for English and French?
A: No. The FOP symbol is inherently bilingual (text appears in both languages on the same symbol).
Q: What if my package is too small?
A: Packages with a principal display area ≤100 cm² are exempt from FOP symbol requirements.
Q: Can I reformulate to avoid the symbol?
A: Yes! Many companies are reformulating products to stay below the 15% DV thresholds. We offer reformulation consulting services.
Q: What file formats does the generator provide?
A: High-resolution PDF, PNG, and EPS files suitable for all design and printing applications.
Q: How do I determine my Reference Amount?
A: Use Health Canada’s official Reference Amount table or our tool’s built-in lookup feature.

Q: Can I put the symbol on the back of the package?
